I can hear you now: What's with all this "milk" and "meat" stuff, anyway?
I’ll admit it: we in religious circles use a lot of lingo. I know that
can potentially be off-putting to an outsider, so I’ll lay it out as plain as I
can here.
In his Word, God uses the apostle Paul to lay out an illustration. He compares a Christian believer’s journey
through life and faith to the life cycle of your physical body. When we’re all young, we feed off of milk,
because it’s really all our body can handle.
Despite the simplicity of the stuff, it’s full of everything we need to
live and grow out of our infancy. But
what would happen if you lived on it forever?
Well, aside from malnutrition (and some really uncomfortable bathroom
breaks…), you’d miss out on what food has to offer. Think about life without having ever tasted
fine cuisine. Some would argue that’s a
crime all on its own.
Being a Christian is like that, which is why Paul uses that
comparison. Sure, John 3:16 has
everything you need to be saved, and if you really buy into it, I suppose that
could be enough. That said, there’s so
much more to faith. There’s meaning that gives your life purpose
and hope. There’s depth that provides
you with a foundation that can withstand whatever life throws at you. There’s complexity and color that makes your
life stand out. If you don’t dig deeper,
then you’ll never live up to everything that God has planned and waiting for
you to experience.
The Bible has a LOT of stuff in it.
The fact is, some people spend their entire lives digging through these
66 uni-bound books and still find new truths and new ways to apply what’s
inside every day. That can sound
intimidating, but don’t worry.
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all
generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)
My purpose with this blog is to guide you, the reader, through some
deeper looks into the Scriptures, and to help you find your own way to
experience God’s Word in a more meaningful way.
